The list would have been a little more helpful if they had included the publisher The Pevear and Volokhonsky translations of Tolstoy's works, they say, goes a long way in diminishing the intimidation factor of Leo Tolstoy. She sometimes gets knocked by uncharitable who think she's "too Victorian" to really get Tolstoy; however, if you compare the Volokhonsky/Pevear translation of Anna Karenina with my girl Connie's, you'll see that the V/K's owe her a pretty big debt. Yes, I've been looking for Hadji Murad too, the version translated by Pevear and Volokhonsky. Well, that was the first time I had really seriously looked into War and Peace at all, and as I poured over the four or five different versions of the novel on the shelf, I couldn't figure out which translation was the "best. Things don't turn out well for her after that. In this case (War and Peace), the Kindle edition is NOT the translation that's mentioned in the product description (Pevear and Volokhonsky). I chose the Pevear/Volokhonsky by the way. Elaine makes a misguided attempt to ingratiate herself with a famous Russian writer (hilariously named Testikov) by telling him what Jerry had jokingly told her earlier: that the original title of War and Peace was War, What Is It Good For? It's a little strange to see War and Peace at 50 and no Anna Karenina or Crime and Punishment in sight given they're generally the more popular translated texts. I think it was published in a book of several short Tolstoy novels. Eventually found the updated Pevear & Volokhonsky translation which made all the difference. There are essentially twelve English translations (or versions) of War and Peace to date, (if you count Bromfield's so-called "Disney Version" and Komroff's radical abridgement of the Garnett translation -- see my notes below.) As I have already alluded to, abridgements of the work are on the market and I cannot generally .. Cunningham's introduction was written before all of thehullabaloo over the Pevear and Volokhonsky translations of War and Peace.
